Is Your PC Safe While Charging? Here is What You Should Know
When you are working on your laptop and you begin to feel the heat from the cpu, one might begin to wonder if it’s safe or risky.
I’ve compiled this article to give a little insight into that. Read the article below and give us your thoughts in the comments section below.
When you are plugged in, your laptop is directly powered by the A/C adapter, not the battery; only excess power goes to the battery. Also, the battery is not in a state of continuous charging whenever you are plugged in; rather it gets topped off whenever the charge level drops below 95% (give or take).
Since the battery is not being used while plugged in, it can take several hours for it to naturally lose that 5% without an active drain.
So yes, it’s OK to use a laptop while it’s charging.
A few caveats:
Laptop battery capacity (i.e. health) drops the most when it is perpetually kept fully charged; this results in a slightly greater drop in capacity over time. If you know that your laptop will stay plugged in over an extended period of time (several months), you are better off removing the battery altogether when it is at 50% charge and storing it in a cool place (heat kills battery health too).
Some manufacturers like Lenovo provide a ‘battery health mode’ which does the same thing – it drops the charging threshold to 50%.
Make sure your laptop is well-ventilated while gaming so that the battery temperature does not get high enough to affect battery health.
